How Do Dental Braces Work?

Great teeth – white, straight, and cavity-free – are every person’s dream. Who would want to have crooked and bad teeth? It reduces a person’s self-esteem and affects overall health. People born with crooked teeth need not suffer from teasing and missed opportunities anymore because of how their teeth look. Dental braces, like the ones from orthoextent.com, are the solution for crooked teeth. If you think that this technology is entirely new – just a few decades old – you are wrong. As early as ancient Egypt, there was evidence showing that ancient Egyptians already used similar contraptions for their teeth. Let us find out how these braces make crooked teeth straight.

Parts

Smaller parts make up dental braces, which work together to achieve their goal of straightening teeth. Here are the different components:

  • Brackets can either be metal or ceramic links that adhere to each tooth.
  • An arch wire is a thin piece of metal wire that connects to each bracket.
  • The bonding material is a tooth-friendly glue that sticks each bracket onto your teeth.
  • The ligature elastic, or the O-ring, connect the wire arch to the brackets. It does a lot of work in straightening teeth. When you visit your dentist, they will adjust the elastic.
  • Spacers can be a little uncomfortable at first, as they go in between the teeth to allow the orthodontic bands to fit through.

How braces work

The pressure exerted on your teeth by the different components of your braces is what straightens them. They may be painful, as the braces adjust the alignment of the teeth to their correct position. The arch wire puts the most pressure on the teeth, and the brackets are there to hold the wire firmly in place. Not all people have the same crooked teeth situation. Some may have it worse than others. If this is the case, rubber parts may come into play to increase the amount of pressure on your teeth.

Wires, in general, can be tough to bend the way that you desire. What makes the arch wire bend to the shape of the teeth is the heat inside the mouth, which is approximately 98 degrees. But the wire will still persist in straightening, hence the pressure on the teeth, which eventually moves them to their desired position.

Bone remodeling

Teeth are bones, and bone remodeling is simply the adjustment of the teeth to their correct positions. The pressure applied to the teeth does not only straighten them into place, but it actually makes the teeth a lot stronger than when they are crooked. The pressure also aids in creating new cells, which make your bone density better.

If you are aiming for a straight set of teeth, you must only visit a licensed dentist to do your braces. There are so many illegal practices that promise straight teeth at a fraction of the cost. The huge difference in the cost between fake and real dentists is what entices people to go with the cheaper alternative. But this alternative may prove to be dangerous, as the ones who make the braces and put them into patients mouths do not undergo proper training.
