3 Methods for Letting Go of Addiction

It’s never ideal to have something take control of your life, and with an alcohol or substance abuse addiction, it may seem as though this is the case. If you’re dealing with an addiction problem, it’s vital to actively work to get rid of it. In most cases, the ideal way to do so is by getting addiction treatment at a professional treatment facility near you.

But it’s also important to do additional things on your own to help you to take charge of your life and learn how to move past your reliance on alcohol or substances. The following are three tips to help you let go of addiction.

Stay away from toxic people

As much as you’d like it to be true, it can be tough for all your friends to be good influences on you. If anything, your addiction may have started from harmless encouragement from friends who want you to enjoy yourself.

Still, when people notice that your consumption of alcohol has become problematic but see no problem in that, these people become toxic to your life and overall health.

In taking active steps to rid yourself of addiction, you’ll want to do is consider if having these toxic people in your life is good for you. If not, you should consider spending less time or avoiding contact with them. You need to make it clear that you’ve changed your way of life and won’t be going back.

Tell the folks you used to party with that you’re trying to get a better grip on your situation — that beating the addiction is the most important thing to you. Hopefully they’ll understand and encourage your recovery.

Don’t mingle with people who don’t have any faith in you or refuse to be encouraging. This can just drag you down and interfere with a positive mindset.

Declutter your home

Keeping your home in good shape and free of clutter is vital if you wish to remain positive during this time. You may not realize just how large an impact your surroundings can have on you.

If you’re living in a clean environment that’s tidy and always looks nice, this will help you feel more positive and upbeat. This is a great time to remove all of the clutter from your home. Put some of the items you don’t use into a self-storage facility. This allows you to keep them in your possession, and you won’t have to sell them or give them away. But they’re still not cluttering up your home, either.

Take a weekend when you have some extra time to do this task. Making your space cleaner can help promote a more optimistic mindset that will make your recovery a little bit easier.

Keep a journal

You’d be amazed how much recording your thoughts can help you move forward during this tough time. Writing your feelings down is a great way to help you vent and channel all of your emotions during your recovery.

You might find that it’s easier to move on in a more positive way with your life when you maintain a journal. Take a bit of time each day to write down how the day went and any negative or positive feelings you have.

This is also a good way to keep track of any possible negative stimuli which are interfering with your recovery. You may discover patterns in your behavior that you can work on changing. Journaling for 20 minutes a day is ideal for getting the assistance you need for better mental health.

Doing what you can to get past any addiction should always be foremost on your mind. This situation could lead to unwanted issues in your life and may cause health concerns. However, addressing your addiction and letting go of any negative feelings you have about it is the key to healing.
