Don’t Throw Your Money Down the Drain: Plumbing Mistakes That Can Cost You

It’s easy to make plumbing mistakes that cause serious problems, and then you’re throwing money down the drain. Prevent the issues with these tips.

One of the beauties of modern homes is how many systems seem to simply run on their own. You don’t have to think about your electricity, your plumbing, your insulation, your home’s support structure, and dozens of other things.

Until you do. Sometimes things go wrong, and then you have to act.

How do you avoid plumbing mistakes to minimize the number of times something goes wrong? How do you avoid throwing money down the drain?

Here are the tips you need.

Don’t Overuse Chemical Drain Cleaner

Many homeowners turn to chemical drain cleaners every time there’s a clog or slow drain. It can certainly help, but if you’re using it regularly it can become a problem.

Over time the chemicals don’t only eat away clogs – they also corrode and damage your pipes. This means that you could be accidentally causing leaks that lead to serious damage in your home.

Consider using a manual auger or natural options to clear clogs. If you’re having frequent problems with slow drains, think about getting a drain screen or contacting a plumber who can give advice for a long-term solution.

Know Where Your Water Shutoffs Are

If there is a leak or you’re doing a DIY project like replacing a faucet, be sure you turn off the water to that fixture. To do this, you’ll need to know ahead of time where the water shutoff valves are.

Sometimes this is easy – the toilet’s water shutoff is right at the base of the bowl, on the wall behind the toilet. Other times you may have to hunt a little. For instance, the main shutoff valve for your entire home is likely located in the basement or it may be on an outside wall.

Find the main water shutoff and test it before a water emergency occurs. If you can’t move it or find it, it’s best to know now! If something goes really wrong, that shutoff valve can save you a lot of damage and money while you call for emergency plumbing in Scarborough.

Don’t Choose the Wrong DIY Project

A huge mistake that can cost you thousands is taking on a plumbing DIY project that’s beyond your skill level. You might end up having to run to the home supply store partway through for a tool you didn’t know you needed, or you might end up overtightening a fixture and causing a major leak.

Either way, you’re throwing money down the drain by trying to DIY a job that should be done by a pro. Be sure you know your own capabilities, get the right sizes of pipes and connectors, and don’t try to take on a job that’s too big.

Be Sure to Winterize Your Plumbing

Having pipes freeze can cause serious damage to your home. Before the weather gets cold, make sure your pipes are insulated and plan to keep your home heat set to at least 13 degrees C. You can also drip a faucet, which helps keep water moving through the pipes.

If your pipes do freeze, do not heat them using an open flame. Instead, use an electric heating pad or electric hair dryer. If you cannot find where the pipe is frozen or the frozen area is inaccessible, call a plumber for help.

When you avoid common mistakes that can cost you a significant amount of money, you’ll be a lot happier, healthier, and even wealthier. Don’t throw money down the drain – follow these tips instead.
